hey siri how do i explain to tumblr that ‘bury your gays’ is about more than the texual death of queer characters and that the textual death of queer characters is not, therefore, always a bad thing
Before this gains any more nonsense here’s the actual TVTropes page.
Literal first sentence of the first paragraph, guys. BYG is literally ENTIRELY about context.
“This trope is the presentation of deaths of LGBT characters where these characters are nominally able to be viewed as more expendable than their heteronormative counterparts. In this way, the death is treated as exceptional in its circumstances.”
See also:
“…they seem to have less purpose compared to straight characters, or that the supposed natural conclusion of their story is an early death.”
BYG as a trope applies when the queer character is treated differently than the rest of the cast, when there’s only one of us and that one example dies, when their death is connected to their sexuality, when queer readers/viewers/etc are fed the message that our deaths are inevitable, when we are introduced solely to die….
It is literally a context-dependent trope.
