city dwelling liberals really make 0 effort to understand why rural voters lean conservative, and fixate on abolishing the electoral college instead of organizing to enfranchise rural non-voters

rural voters aren’t white conservatives because rural people are white conservatives; rural voters are white conservatives because:

- the rural u.s. is organized around an agricultural industry where white landowners exploit a labor force of migrant workers who are less likely to be citizens than their urban counterparts

- the republican party has bent over backwards to establish a relationship w those white landowners, building a reputation for “supporting rural industry” while advancing policies that maintain/increase rural racial and economic stratification. meanwhile, the democratic party has made no effort to reach out to rural workers, instead fully buying into the myth of the white rural republican and focusing their efforts on city dwellers. consequently the republican party is the party of rural capitalists, the democratic party is the party of urban capitalists, and there is no workers party

- rural areas are heavily racially segregated, which makes every voter suppression tactic in the book – gerrymandering, uneven transportation access, uneven registration outreach – more effective

- because city dwelling liberals believe that all rural people are irreformable r*publican scum, rural organizers are left to face these barriers without access to the funding and political influence of a nonprofit industry that’s concentrated in cities

the turnout of indigenous voters who live on reservations, and black voters who live in the rural south and midwest, in this election can be 100% attributed to the voter enfranchisement efforts of organizers from those communities. if city dwelling democrats focused on contributing resources to those efforts, and organizing against policies that disenfranchise rural people of color, they would have an easier time winning elections with or without the electoral college
